Mandi Baykaa-MurrayThe Feather Lady
An artist inspired by the natural World, best known for her painted feathers, Mandi’s inspiration comes from the Birds of Prey she was fortunate to work with and care for. Forming a close bond with the birds, their quirky personalities and intricate feathers particularly intrigued her and are now intrinsic to her work. It is a rare opportunity to see these stunning birds up close, but Mandi is happy to share her experiences of them with the viewer through her paintings.
Mandi loves to experiment with different media and has developed a variety of working processes which incorporate painting, traditional printmaking techniques, and various ways to use the birds’ feathers as well as painting on them.
Exhibiting throughout the UK she sells both locally and internationally. In 2014, Mandi’s painting ‘Feathered Friend’ was a finalist of The David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of The Year Exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London, and she was shortlisted again the following year with ‘Soul Free’.
In March 2017, Mandi was Artist In Residence for a week at Nature In Art, Gloucester where she exhibited her feathers and demonstrated her varied painting techniques.
Rutland Bird Fair has become an annual fixture in Mandi’s exhibition schedule, and last year, she was invited to exhibit at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre which raised valuable funds for the important conservation work carried out by WWT. Earlier this year, Mandi’s largest solo exhibition to date, ‘Feathered Friends’ was held at WWT London Wetlands Centre, until the Covid 19 Lockdown halted proceedings.
A council member of TWASI (The Wildlife Art Society International), Mandi exhibits regularly and has won several awards including the The St Cuthbert‘s Mill Prize for ‘Best Work On Paper’ 2016; the Christopher Parsons Award for Artistic Excellence in 2017, and ‘Highly Commended’ in 2018 and 2019 for her feather paintings.
A lover of all animals, Mandi also enjoys painting domestic animals and regularly takes on Pet Portrait commissions.
